Equine assisted therapy is an approach used by qualified and licensed therapists who incorporate horses as an adjunct to standard therapy. There are many models of practice, and empirical evidence as to the positive outcomes for people.
Sessions are usually run with 2 people – the therapist and a volunteer to manage the horses, or a support worker to support the participant. Business owner and Principal Psychologist Shirley Villarreal, uses a variety of techniques developed over several years in the equine industry as a rider, trainer and instructor and she brings a unique and holistic approach to her therapy program.
Horses, as prey animals are highly attuned to human body language and when integrated into therapy, horses are able to assist people to learn about themselves in a non-judgemental manner. By interacting with horses in a nonclinical environment, equine assisted therapy is especially valuable for those who struggle to engage in therapy in a standard clinical space.
Horses are able to build a unique bond with people, promoting mental wellness while teaching trust, safety, self-awareness, emotional regulation, and may be used for those experiencing conditions such as, but not exclusive to: PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) anxiety, depression, autism, and trauma. This experiential modality assists people to learn assertiveness skills, leadership skills, effective communication, learn boundaries and experience overall personal growth.
Equine assisted therapy consists of primarily non-ridden activities, and is suitable for groups, families or individuals. You will interact with the horses in an experiential way with guided activities. Sessions are designed to be interesting and have several learning outcomes that are processed with participants after the activities are completed.
No horse experience is necessary, just a willingness to be open to new possibilities. Activities involve interactions with horses under guidance by your therapist. For individuals with disabilities, a support worker is required to be in attendance, and they may or may not engage in the session.
